Discover the Milestones
Nova et Vetera: A Semester of Firsts at Bishop Miege
The blend of “nova et vetera” — the new and the old — is alive and thriving in every corner of Miege with these firsts.
New Traditions Begin
First-Time Highlights
This semester at Bishop Miege has been one for the books with 20 firsts and counting. We’re watching new ideas flourish while deepening the roots of our traditions. Here’s a look at some of the milestone moments shaping our vibrant community this year.
Innovations in Education
Impactful Changes This Semester
Firsts in Faith
Faith life took on new depth this semester with powerful shared experiences. Juniors embarked on the school’s first overnight grade retreat, we consecrated Miege with a 33-day Marian consecration before breaking ground on the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, and our first-ever Dads’ Mass filled the gym with prayer and connection.
Project Studio Innovation
The Joseph M. Pedrotti Innovation Center continues to turn imagination into action. Students are transforming ideas into tangible results by engineering blood vessels in Principles of Biomedical Science and building parametric models in AP Calculus. Students used the new research bench to develop and present eco-friendly solutions at science fairs.
Celebrating Individual Excellence
Trailblazers across our school earned well-deserved recognition. Elaine Schmidtberger became the first Archdiocesan High School Counselor of the Year, Melissa Reynolds was named an Ingram’s Icon of Education, and junior Molly Benes became our first female wrestler to place at State.
Making the Most of Academic Grants
Thanks to new grants, we’re bringing big ideas to life in bold and creative ways. Our new donated pottery kiln supported its first whole-class project. With grants from the Brown Family Charitable Foundation, a Writing Lab is in development for 25-26 and STREAM-focused summer workshops are coming to support and inspire local elementary educators.
Expanding Academic Horizons
New academic opportunities are empowering students in and out of the classroom. Seven students earned the Kansas Seal of Biliteracy, two dynamic new courses launched (AP African American Studies and Medical Interventions), and we introduced honor societies for math and world languages.
Arts on the Rise
Creativity flourished this semester with standout achievements in the arts. From national yearbook Pacemaker finalist honors and organizing a joint choir concert with area Catholic schools, our students are making their voices heard. Senior Franny Chaffee-McClure also made history as Miege’s first 4-time national forensics qualifier. Our theatre program won its first Blue Star Award for design for the musical’s makeup and hair.
Firsts with Real-World Impact for Our Students
Students are exploring futures through hands-on learning. Career-focused Impact Choice Days gave them a look into real professions, and at JCCC’s Job Olympics, Miege represented as the only Catholic school and proudly took home second place as a team.
