Student Journalism at Bishop Miege: A Letter from the Editor

“People often ask what makes Bishop Miege different. They might point to our academic programs, successful athletic teams or long list of extracurricular activities and while those are certainly part of the story, they aren’t what makes this school special. What makes Miege unique is its people.”

By: Megan Ball, Class of 2027

Welcome to another school year at Bishop Miege.

Whether you’re walking through these halls for the first time or returning for your final year, every August brings the same feeling: a fresh start. New classes, new and old faces, familiar traditions and countless opportunities waiting to unfold.

People often ask what makes Bishop Miege different. They might point to our academic programs, successful athletic teams, or long list of extracurricular activities, and while those are certainly part of the story, they aren’t what makes this school special. What makes Miege unique is its people.

The Herd System reminds us that no one succeeds alone. It’s a daily reminder that we’re stronger when we support one another, celebrate each other’s successes, and step up when someone needs help. Whether you’re competing on the field, performing on stage, leading a club, or simply helping a classmate through a difficult assignment, those moments define what it means to be a part of the Miege community.

The same sense of community extends into every part of our campus. Our teachers who are deeply invested in each student’s success. Campus Ministry gives students the opportunities to grow in their faith, serve others, and reflect the values that shape our school. From Friday night cheers and everyday interactions in the hallways to service projects or class retreats, Bishop Miege is a place where students are known, challenged, and encouraged to become the best version of themselves.

The student newspaper reflects life at Miege

There are many ways to leave your mark here. Some students will discover a passion for academics, others through athletics, service, the arts, or leadership. The opportunities here are only limited by the willingness to take that first step. You never know which class, club, or conversation might shape the rest of your high school experience.

As Editor-in-Chief, one of my goals this year is to tell the stories that often go unnoticed. The Miegian staff will show the moments of perseverance, achievement, community, and everyday life that are the moments that make Miege more than a school. Our newsmagazine exists to inform, celebrate, and connect our community, and I hope every student sees themselves reflected in its pages.

Finding your place and making your mark

As this year begins, I encourage you to say yes to something new. Join the club that interests you, attend the game, introduce yourself to someone sitting alone, or simply take pride in being a part of this community. High school can pass quickly, but the memories and relationships you build here can last much longer.

On behalf of the entire newspaper staff, welcome, or welcome back. Here’s to a year filled with growth, new experiences and stories worth telling.
