LEARNING RESOURCE
The goal of the Learning Resource Department is to build an inclusive school community that supports students of all abilities in their spiritual, academic, and social growth.
Collaboration and communication are key to student success. The Learning Resource Department works with students, families, faculty, community professionals, and physicians to guide the development and achievement of our students. The Learning Resource Department is in charge of developing and ensuring the implementation of accommodation and student support plans.
Bishop Miege provides accommodations to students identified as needing additional supports within the classroom. Miege offers two different types of accommodation plans: the Catholic School Student Support Plan and our Bishop Miege Student Plan for Minor Adjustments. Students with a variety of diagnoses can benefit from accommodation plans. The Learning Resource Department also partners with the public school districts to support students with Individualized Educations Programs (IEPs).
Catholic School Student Support Plan
(in compliance with a 504 for private schools)
The Catholic School Student Support Plan is an accommodation plan based on an evaluation completed by a licensed medical doctor or psychologist. Miege provides accommodations based on the individual needs of students, taking into account the resources available to our school. Students with a CSSSP require a documented diagnosis and data determining their eligibility. This plan is updated annually.
Bishop Miege Student Plan for Minor Adjustments
Students requiring accommodations in the classroom may be placed on a Bishop Miege Student Support Plan. This plan allows for minor adjustments to be provided to the student based on need determined by the students team (student, parent, administrators, counselor, Learning Resource).
A Bishop Miege graduate, our Learning Resource Director Mallorie Hurlbert brings over a decade of experience in Special Education, guided by deep faith and a heart for student success. Holding a Master’s in Educational Leadership and a Master’s in Social Work, she also earned a Certificate in Special and Inclusive Educational Leadership.
Her commitment to welcoming and supporting every learner reflects the words of Romans 15:7, her favorite verse: “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”

Accommodations for ACT/SAT or AP courses
The Learning Resource Department works with families to request accommodations on national tests, such as the ACT, SAT, as well as, for testing in Advanced Placement courses which provide college credit. To request accommodations families must provide consent to release information, evaluation reports from initial diagnosis, documentation of the students current diagnosis, and a copy of the students current accommodation plan. Without these items, requests for accommodations cannot be made.
Tiered Course System
Our tiered system consists of courses offering small group support in study skills, academics, and opportunities for advancement in functional skills. The following courses are available for students who demonstrate a need for additional support, as written in a student support plan or as identified by the Learning Resource Department.
Guided Studies (I and II)
Guided Studies is a time for students to work on various academic and executive functioning skills. These skills include promoting self-advocacy, time management, organization, effective communication, prioritization, and study skills, in addition to recognizing the value of our Catholic faith. Students will have time to work on coursework and receive support from the Guided Studies teacher and the Math Hub. Students receive a letter grade for this course. Enrollment in this course is based on high school placement test results and the determination of the student’s team (parents, administrators, counselor, and Learning Resource).
Personal Growth
Personal Growth is a time for students to work on various academic skills. Personal Growth is utilized as the next step from Guided Studies and allows students the opportunity to independently utilize skills of self-advocacy, time management, organization, and communication, in addition to recognizing the value of our Catholic faith. Students will have time to work on coursework, receive support from the Personal Growth teacher, and have direct access to the Math Hub. This class is based on a pass/fail grading system. Enrollment in this course is based on the determination of the student’s team (parents, administrators, counselor, and Learning Resource).
LRD- Personal Growth
This course is designed to be additional support to a student with special considerations. Students in this course are also enrolled in a Guided Studies or Personal Growth class on alternate days, resulting in daily academic supports. Within this course students work on individual academic, social, and functional needs. Enrollment in this course is based on high school placement test results and the determination of the student’s team (parents, administrators, counselor, and Learning Resource).
Entrepreneurship
The Entrepreneurship course is designed to give students the opportunity to operate a real business. Students will make decisions regarding; product planning and inventory, promotions, visual merchandising and financial analysis. Students will gain valuable leadership and communication skills through their experience working as a store management team, vendor, and customer. Students will utilize community based learning during this course. Students receive a letter grade for this course. This course has a maximum enrollment and is open to students of all abilities. Peer Mentorship Program
Peer Mentors act as an extension of the Learning Resource Department and work within classrooms to support all students. Peer mentoring is intended for students who desire an academic guidance role in a classroom setting. An application process is required for acceptance into course, and training is provided prior to supporting students.
Peer Mentor Responsibilities:
- Support whole class, small groups, or individual students
- Provide academic assistance
- Nurture positive relationships
- Attend social events with peers
Peer Mentors receive a letter grade for this course, which is open to junior and senior students.
