Leading the Herd: Freshman Welcome at Bishop Miege
“Now, standing on the other side as a senior, I see why the Freshman Welcome tradition matters so much. It’s not just about balloons, shirts, or cheers. It’s about creating a memory that helps new students feel at home from the very start of their time at Bishop Miege.”

At the beginning of each school year, the front circle drive at Bishop Miege fills with color and excitement as the new class of freshmen arrives. Seniors, dressed in bright Herd T-shirts, line a red carpet at the entrance, ready with smiles and cheers. Balloons float overhead while each freshman’s name is announced, making the start of high school feel less like a first day and more like a celebration.
Building confidence from day one
As one of eight Herd Execs, my classmates and I took turns opening car doors and greeting each new student. Some stepped out laughing and confident, while others seemed to carry the same nerves I remember from my first day. Either way, they were met with encouragement, because this tradition is about showing every freshman that they belong here.
Looking back, my own Freshman Welcome was a blur. But, what I do remember clearly are the smiles of the seniors who greeted me. That moment stuck with me, even as the years went on. I admired the way those older students carried themselves, and I wanted to be like them.
Why the Freshman Welcome matters
Now, standing on the other side as a senior, I see why the tradition matters so much. It’s not just about balloons, shirts, or cheers. It’s about creating a memory that helps new students feel at home from the very start of their time at Bishop Miege.
The Freshman Welcome is just one example of how Miege students support one another. It’s a small moment, but for many of us, it’s the beginning of building friendships, confidence, and the feeling that we are part of something bigger than ourselves!
