ACADEMICS

The English department provides a strong foundation in reading, writing, and critical thinking through courses in grammar, literature, and composition. Students analyze literary works, refine their writing through structured assignments, and prepare for college-level coursework with AP options. Our Writing Lab offers students the chance to further develop their writing skills and show proficiency through department-wide mastery tests. 

Bishop Miege is proud of its tradition in the arts. Our students regularly showcase their work, earning recognition at both the local and national level. They are led by top-notch faculty members, including the Kansas High School Teacher of the Year for our choir program and a 7-Diamond award winner at the national level for our debate and forensics program. The fine arts department consists of vocal and instrumental music, theater, visual arts, video production, debate and forensics, and journalism.

The math department builds problem-solving skills and analytical thinking through courses ranging from Algebra to AP Calculus. Through our Math Hub and department-wide mastery tests, students confidently achieve each course’s standards, preparing them for success as they progress through the math department.

Bishop Miege offers three PLTW pathways: Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science. Through hands-on projects, students design and test engineering solutions, explore medical interventions, and develop coding skills. PLTW’s circular curriculum introduces advanced topics like structural engineering and computer-aided design during students’ freshman and sophomore years, allowing them to revisit and deepen their understanding when they circle back to these same topics during their junior and senior years.

Social Studies courses explore history, government, and global issues, fostering critical thinking and civic awareness. Students examine past and present events through analysis of primary sources, discussions, and research projects. With extensive college-credit elective options in this department, students experience in-depth explorations of various societal structures​.

The science department offers a variety of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. Students engage in hands-on labs, data analysis, and real-world problem-solving to deepen their understanding of scientific principles. Specialized courses such as Human Anatomy and AP Physics provide pathways for students interested in medical, engineering, and research fields​.

We ultimately want each student to be a saint, and that starts with our wonderful theology department. These classes provide students with a deeper understanding of Catholic teachings, scripture, and moral decision-making. Students explore their faith through discussions, service projects, and Campus Ministry involvement.

The World Language department offers courses in Spanish and French, emphasizing communication, culture, and linguistic proficiency. We are proud to be one of the only schools in the city offering a French VI class. The mastery test program in the World Language department ensures students are truly learning the necessary skills at each level of their Spanish and French classes, preparing students for fluency and global engagement​.
